EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS IN ART, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Section I - Advanced Literacy Virtual Africa: The Spirit and Power of Water Created by
Leonardo's
French counterpart, OLATS,
this multicultural and interdisciplinary three-year arts and science project
will focus on the cultural and scientific contexts of water. A part of
OLATS's Afrique
Virtuelle, the project will begin with consideration of the multiple
roles of water in the African continent, the land known as a cradle of
civilization but which also suffers critical problems related the shortage
and purification of water. The project will then expand its reflections
to include the roles and signification of water in the artistic and cultural
activities of other human societies. Students worldwide are invited to
contribute to The Spirit and Power of Water; educational facets of this
project will include translation, the visual arts, music and biological
studies. (See Beginning Literacy below for information about FluidArts
initial WaterRoots project, currently in development.)
Section II - Intermediate Literacy Youthful collaborations on: the artist in space, life in space, cultural perspectives on space. Using the Leonardo On-Line Space Art Special Project as a point of departure, FluidArts has created an international collaboration between students in New York, Estonia, Russia and The Netherlands, who have created electronic worksheets on Space exploration and art involving space. SpaceArt is also supported by Miksike. Essay: Translation as Homage
The FluidArts Translation Team has translated texts into English, Spanish and Russian. One Translation project, translated the pages of Virtual Africa: FluidArts River Festival Project, a project established by the Association Leonardo in France as a French speaking project addressing art and science in the African context. The River Festival, created by Algerian artist Camel Zekri, followed Zekri as he journeyed down the Mouhoun River in Burkina Faso, and documented his performances and artistic experiments on the web. In early 2000, students From John F. Kennedy High School in New York City, and Miksike Estonia translated the River Festival pages into Spanish, English, and Russian. Section III - Beginning Literacy Created by Mihkel Pilv, of Estonia, and sponsored by Miksike, the Student Factory is a virtual workplace where students can produce web projects on subjects ranging from translation to virtual communication. This learning environment won the educational category of The Stockholm Challenge Award for 1999. The template for the FluidArts project, WaterRoots, in conjunction with the Spirit and Power of Water, is hosted here. |
